Edward, Thank you for replying.I'm not sure I can count on the hardware vendor to care that enthusiastically about Linux support. They did provide Linux drivers for the onboard sound and network devices on their CD-ROM. But I get the feeling that was done more in the spirit of the fact that applicable Linux drivers were available anyway. They certainly don't seem to be very up to date or well documented.Hardware vender's who care about Linux support make sure there drivers make it into the mainline kernel were they will be supported by all distributions and properly maintained. What's throwing me right now is that there seems to be a certain random quality to the way my sound devices are handled. I've disconnected my USB sound device for now in hopes of cutting down confusion. However, I still have two devices listed in my Gnome Volume Control: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) Realtek ALC882 (OSS mixer)Before, I was able to record my voice in Audacity. Now I can't. Before, Audacity had two sound devices for me to choose from:/dev/dsp /dev/dsp1 Now it only has /dev/dsp/ and I can't record anything with it. I've discovered a GUI for ALSA Mixer, which says I have: Card: HDA Intel Chip: Realtek ALC882Which leads me to believe that they are the same thing, but being treated differently by the OS.How can I cut the confusion down here? Is there anyway I can wipe the slate clean and do a fresh install of the drivers? Clearly I want to be using one set of drivers for the one card I have.By the way, if it helps, here is some information I found through the ALSA Mixer GUI:dave@example.com:/proc/asound$ ls card0 cards devices hwdep Intel modules oss pcm seq timers version dave@example.com:/proc/asound$ more devices 18: [0- 2]: digital audio playback 25: [0- 1]: digital audio capture 16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback 24: [0- 0]: digital audio capture 0: [0- 0]: ctl 33: : timer dave@example.com:/proc/asound$ more cards 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xc9df8000 irq 233 dave@example.com:/proc/asound$ more modules 0 snd_hda_intel dave@example.com:/proc/asound$ more versionAdvanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10rc3 (Mon Nov 07 13:30:212005 UTC). dave@example.com:/proc/asound$ more pcm 00-00: ALC882 Analog : ALC882 Analog : playback 1 : capture 2 00-01: ALC882 Analog : ALC882 Analog : capture 2 00-02: ALC882 Digital : ALC882 Digital : playback 1 And the current state of amixer: dave@example.com:/proc/asound/card0$ amixer Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0 Capabilities: pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Mono: Front Left: Playback [off] Front Right: Playback [off] Simple mixer control 'PCM',0 Capabilities: pvolume Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 255 Mono: Front Left: Playback 255 [100%] Front Right: Playback 255 [100%] Simple mixer control 'Front',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on] Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on] Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Surround',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Center',0 Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined Playback channels: Mono Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'LFE',0 Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined Playback channels: Mono Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Side',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Line',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'CD',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 24 [77%] [on] Front Right: Playback 24 [77%] [on] Simple mixer control 'Mic',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Mono: Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on] Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on] Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0 Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined Playback channels: Mono Mono: Playback [off] Simple mixer control 'Capture',0 Capabilities: cvolume cswitch Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Capture 0 - 31 Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Capture',1 Capabilities: cvolume cswitch Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Capture 0 - 31 Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Capture',2 Capabilities: cvolume cswitch Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Capture 0 - 31 Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [off] Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [off] Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0 Capabilities: enum Items: 'Mic' 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'CD' Item0: 'Mic' Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1 Capabilities: enum Items: 'Mic' 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'CD' Item0: 'Mic' Simple mixer control 'Input Source',2 Capabilities: enum Items: 'Mic' 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'CD' Item0: 'Mic' -- Dave M G
