Dave can simply try 'addgroup[1] user group' instead of messing with sed scripts. Yes, I know addgroup is not compatible with other distros, but since he is using a Debian-based one, I don't see why he can't use a friendlier tool to do his admin tasks. Just keep in mind that this command is not distro-universal.
[1] man addgroup
Or he could edit the files directly using vipw:
sudo vipw /etc/group
As is usually the case a quick trip to man vipw may help.
Please note that you should not use a normal editor directly on the group or passwd files. Lest corruption of said files and grief may ensue...
