Well,

Dave can simply try 'addgroup[1] user group' instead of messing with
sed scripts. Yes, I know addgroup is not compatible with other
distros, but since he is using a Debian-based one, I don't see why he
can't use a friendlier tool to do his admin tasks. Just keep in mind
that this command is not distro-universal.
