This is interesting. I live in Switzerland, where people working
in engineering in general are expected to do overtime when the
need arises. But every hour has to be compensated, either by
an equivalent amount of free time or by paying it out, with
a 25% additional compensation. At least that's the law.
The better companies (ie those who value their employees) often
compensate far more liberal, like every hour overtime is compensated
+25% in free time or +50% in money.

This i can very much understand. Even though the work laws
in Japan are very liberal, the general attitude towards
work and overtime is much more healthy than what i've seen
in europe.
