Re: work times & accommodation @tokyo, WAS: Re: [tlug] Embedded linux dev wanting to find work in Tokyo.. Seeking advice.

... I don't know what the situation is in most Japanese companies, does anyone have concrete data?

I offered my empirical data already and got shot down (something having to do with "Americans" not being typical of the Japanese workforce or that many take their work home or some such rot -- save that I'm actually the only American working for the local office of my current company and, being a sales and support office, it's kinda hard to take work home; the exception being the local company President who seems to work longer hours than most of the Japanese employees).

I doubt anyone on the list has worked for *most* Japanese companies so the best you can do is settle for anecdotal data. In my former company (back when I actually used to go to the office every day) I could walk through the floor at 8am or 8pm and see less than 20% of the staff at their desks. Whether working for a Western company corrupts the employees, whether said corrupted employees are drawn to a Western company, whether the industry I'm in is such that overtime is not expected, or whether the stories are simply overblown -- I have no idea, really. But it's not my experience that *everyone* hereworks ridiculous hours. However, there are always the show-offs...
