Darren, Godwin,
Thank you for responding.
Darren Cook wrote:The bad news is that my old installation is having Nvidia troubles, so it's hard to check on that one.Are you still able to boot into the old system where the SD card works? If so, try that, insert an SD card, and then do lsmod,
The good news is that my girlfriend's laptop mounts the SD cards just fine. So I can look at the difference on that machine.
I put in an SD card on her computer, and ran lsmod. It's a little long, so it's hard for the human eye to pick out the similarities and differences.
My lsmod shows:
sd_mod 23428 5
scsi_mod 142348 5 usb_storage,sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata
usbcore 134280 7 usbhid,wacom,usb_storage,libusual,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd
usbhid 26592 0
usb_storage 72256 0
Her lsmod shows: sd_mod 22656 2 usb_storage 75072 1 scsi_mod 144648 3 sg,sd_mod,usb_storage usbcore 134912 4 usb_storage,libusual,ohci_hcd
But as far as I can tell, hers doesn't have a usbhid entry, and I do. Maybe that's a problem?
I tried dmesg on her machine:
[17179759.160000] SCSI device sdd: 1935360 512-byte hdwr sectors (991 MB)
[17179759.172000] sdd: Write Protect is off
[17179759.172000] sdd: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
[17179759.172000] sdd: assuming drive cache: write through
[17179759.196000] SCSI device sdd: 1935360 512-byte hdwr sectors (991 MB)
[17179759.208000] sdd: Write Protect is off
[17179759.208000] sdd: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
[17179759.208000] sdd: assuming drive cache: write through
[17179759.208000] sdd: sdd1
[17179760.308000] FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
And on mine: [ 853.106254] SCSI device sdd: 1935360 512-byte hdwr sectors (991 MB) [ 853.106876] sdd: Write Protect is off [ 853.106881] sdd: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00 [ 853.106887] sdd: assuming drive cache: write through [ 853.108623] SCSI device sdd: 1935360 512-byte hdwr sectors (991 MB) [ 853.109246] sdd: Write Protect is off [ 853.109250] sdd: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00 [ 853.109254] sdd: assuming drive cache: write through [ 853.109257] sdd: sdd1
The only difference is the last warning she gets, about FAT file systems.
And yet, she gets a nice icon on her desktop, and I can't access the card at all.
Is there anything else I can test on her machine to see what's making icons happen for her?
Godwin said:Nothing wrong with it. Just not how I want to do it. And I don't want to let a malfunction dictate my choices.Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur, but what is wrong with mounting an external device using the keyboard anyway?
