Internships are by definition high commitment jobs and should be paid because you can't expect people to live without providing them the means to live. Unpaid internships should be illegal, regardless of the employer (private company or charity).

But unpaid internships and low commitment volunteer work that does not impair your ability to make a living are two very different things that should not be considered the same.

A charity works for the public good. A private company doesn't. Both are entitled to ask for volunteer work but in the case of the charity such work contributes to lowering the cost of its activities while in the case of the private company volunteers contribute to enriching executives. That's a fundamental difference.
