Icons and a million other things cluttering up the desktop are a waste of time IMO. It's far easier for me to press the dedicated "email" button on my keyboard to fire up Sylpheed than to leave the keyboard and reach for the mouse. The taskbar does, however have its uses and I don't object to a small strip of real estate (on a 19" LCD monitor) being occupied. That is all there is, though. No fancy wallpaper, no icons, no nothing to distract me from what I'm doing. It could even be argued that I have hardly any need for a GUI at all except that I do a fair amount of video processing and I earn my living among other things building websites. -- G.
