Last I looked GNOME was deprecating libart, in favor of Cairo.

I'm looking at Cairo (and libsvg) at the moment, as they are probably
lighterweight than Ghostscript. :-)  Of course they're documented the
way Keith Packard documents everything, but that's still better than
the fancyformat .h's that GNOME seems to think is documentation.

Cairo and libsvg have two big advantages: no GPL (IIRC), and few
dependencies on external libraries (freetype and expat or libxml2 for
libsvg, whatever you are going to use for backend for Cairo).
