Josh Glover wrote:[LHS] Yes... I'm not afraid of open-machine surgery on desktops, but with laptops.....Working on laptops takes experience, patience, tiny screwdrivers, and a surgeon's steady hand. I possess all of these qualities, plus an extensive amount of free time, and as such, might be willing to help you out if a certain brand of dark Irish beer was guaranteed to be present for post-surgery recovery.Wow! That would be great! I'll see how it holds up just running all the time for a bit, and if I'm desperate, then I'll stock up on Guinness and invite you over![LHS] What sort of life expectancy is typical for a laptop hard drive running 24 hours a day?It varies, just like desktops. There are good hard drives and bad, good manufacturers and bad, good batches and bad. I had an seven year old IBM ThinkPad with the original drive, humming along as pretty as you please, but the hard drive on my two year old refurbished Dell Inspiron 600m just went south. What were the sizes of those drives? With ever tinier heads and running at faster speeds, I suppose hard drive life expectancy is dropping?[LHS] I probably should change the performance settings so that the machine can give the hard drive a rest while the machine is just idling.Yes indeed. Take a look at the thread wherein SJT and Tobias were rapping about noflushd and Linux 2.6. As the archives are currently no up to date, I can forward you Tobias's email if you need. Hit me offlist. The crux of it is /usr/src/linux/Documentation/laptop_mode.txtThanks! And - completely off-topic - I just posted some photos of the 2005 Tokyo Motor & Model Show. There are five pages, the links are as follows: http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/PhotoGlryMain/pgb/MtrShw05_1.html http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/PhotoGlryMain/pgb/MtrShw05_2.html http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/PhotoGlryMain/pgb/MtrShw05_3.html http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/PhotoGlryMain/pgb/MtrShw05_4.html http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/PhotoGlryMain/pgb/MtrShw05_5.html - or you can access the above pages from the "Photo Gallery": http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/PhotoGlryMain/LHS_PhotoGallery.html Apologies for the design of the site by the way - if you click on the main picture on the front page: http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~LLLtrs/ - it takes you to the photo gallery. Clicking on a title there takes you to that page. Clicking on any photo takes you back to the front page.... The best way to access the photo pages is to click on the titles on the "Photo Gallery" page and then hit "Back" (of your browser) to return to the "Photo Gallery". Either that or two clicks - one on a photo to get back to the front page, and one on the front page photo to get back to the "Photo Gallery".... Lyle
