It's one reason I stopped using ibus. In FreeBSD, I had to write a little
script to get it work without the mouse, and at that point, I tried fcitx,
and found I preferred it. 
If you don't want to switch to fcitx, I guess you could try running
ibus-setup, if I remember correctly, there's a place to choose what key
activates it.
