I guess it could be a hardware problem or that it's an option that wasn't available in the older version of Mint. Hopefully the move to Mint 19 was seamless and didn't result in any lost of data. After my aforementioned mishap, I accepted the fact that a re-installation may happen some day. On Ubuntu, even an upgrade from one LTS to another can result in a re-installation. (i.e., a re-installation will solve my problem faster) So I now placed /home and other directories in their own partitions. (I had it all within root thinking that I didn't know how much the various directories would grow...I almost always overestimate the root partition, resulting in wasted space.) Good luck! Ray PS: About your suspicions about the broken hardware, have you tried connecting an external keyboard to your computer?
