Well, he had his personal Coda branches in a couple of git repos on a
Coda filesystem for two or three years when he wrote that; I think he
knew whereof he spoke.

I agree with you that theory is shaky, and I don't know what his usage
pattern was -- probably there were no concurrent commits.
