Aargh, you didn't read his post carefully!  He has a .profile!!  If he
creates .bash_profile, bash will ignore .profile, and unless .profile
is empty, he loses.

This one reason that editing dotfiles doesn't mix with the use of
"user-friendly" config UIs.
