Right. Truthfully, most of my production boxes are Linux (RHEL) or Solaris so I don't usually have to do all that much compiling. Actually, the closest I get to using a *BSD in production these days is with the Netapp Filers I manage at work, which are based off of Freebsd. But, If you think a package you are going to need to build will interfere with prodcution you should be able to wait to off hours to build it. Or possibly you could nice the compile processes way up or even build it on another machine then move it onto the prod machine if you were really worried about it.

Just some ideas, but I really don't think it would be much of an issue as chances are you wouldn't have a super critical app running on a low resource machine.
