Keith, Neils, Curt,
Thank you all for responding.
I went down to the store again this afternoon, and there was good news and bad news.
On the good side, I looked at the BIOS and confirmed that it can boot from a USB CD Drive, a "USB Device", and a network boot.
But on the other hand, I've confirmed that the battery that comes with it is completely dead. As (another) Dave pointed out, replacing the battery can cost a lot, and take a way a lot of the joy of getting a cheap used laptop.
I've been looking on the net, and can't find a place that even actually sells batteries for this model (it's an NEC "Versapro" series). If it's discontinued, that would be even more of a joy killer.
So I've decided to pause for a bit and think about this some more.
Maybe I should just wait until I can afford one of these: http://www.zareason.com/shop/product.php?productid=16150&cat=0&page=1
