Note that CC licenses don't help protect your work.  Copyright does
that.  What a license does is help to make it valuable by allowing
others to use it in ways reserved to the author by copyright law.  Nor
can you use a license "by default".  Unless you explicitly state
permission to do otherwise, all rights are reserved.  If the work is
not accompanied by a permission statement, how can anybody know
otherwise? :-)  (I assume that Josh meant that unless you have reason
to do otherwise, explicitly state a CC license, of course.  But as
Josh says, this is an area where we should be careful about i-dotting
and t-crossing.)

I do encourage use of an explicit licensing statement, even if it's
the default of "All Rights Reserved".  The CC licenses are well
thought of by legal professionals if you wish to grant users more
rights to use your work.
