8139cp were loaded

Good. This likely means you nic has been detected and the correct modules have been inserted.

no.

On the command line run the following command. It should let you know if eth0 is available:

ifconfig eth0

If all looks well then you should be able to use the gui to configure
your network settings.

me neither.  just using the gui.  the hardware that was listed was not
what matched what my motherboard manual says would be.  I noticed an
entry for the correct hardware.  so i deleted and created an entry for
the hardware and device.  that was for the onboard lan.

thought that it wouldn't work due to the driver (based on google)

so got rid of all entries and put in a new card then rebooted.
didn't touch the entries after rebooting.

If you go back to that gui application now do you see a network card? If so you should be able to configure it within the gui normally.
