Try doing a "strings | grep LC_PAPER" on all executables :-) that
would at least tell you if they reference it..

Ah, thanks. Yes it wasn't on the path. I didn't realize it was part of
open office. Curiously this already said paper size is A4. But oowriter
still uses Letter.

Incidentally every program I've tried (i.e. firefox, thunderbird, gedit)
defaults to Letter, even after setting LC_PAPER and /etc/papersize. So
it must be some central setting I've not yet tracked down. In fact
spadmin is the only thing so far to say A4.
