A bit of a followup. I tried installing Fedora with the ATI card. It
got a bit further before freezing--that is, X started but then it
froze on looking for Fedora installations.

Then, I thought I would repeat the experiment with Edgy Eft, install it,
then upgrade to Xorg-7.1, again with the ATI card. It never even booted
properly into X, just gave me a kaleidescope type screen where the mouse
wouldn't move.

That's all I had time to do tonight. So, I think Jim's point that the
card is an unlikely culprit is correct. :)

Spike: Whatcha doin', love?
Drusilla: I'm naming the stars.
Spike: You can't see the stars, love. That's the ceiling. Also
it's day.
Drusilla: No, I can see them. But I've named them all the same
name, and there's terrible confusion.
