The disadvantage of the static 'group' approach is that (obviously) anyone in that group can use the audio device, even if they aren't at the console. Their playing sound could be unexpected, and "bugging" your desktop unwanted. Some modern distributions (certainly Redhat/Fedora :-) use PAM to change ownership of the sound and other computer devices that can be thought of as belonging to the person sitting at the computer upon console login/logout. Configuration files in /etc/security/* control which devices and their modes. I *suspect* recent SuSE distributions are in this category.
