Yeah, I think Gentoo uses udev to accomplish this, but since my wife and I are both logged in on different virtual consoles basically all the time on my laptop, and we both want sound to work, I have to use the static groups approach. No-one can ssh into my laptop (as far as I know ;), so I don't have to worry about remote users pwning my audio hardware. But you make a good point, and I had not thought about that particular shortcoming. Cheers, Josh
