hmm, on my Debian desktop machine:

  $ file `which rename`
  /usr/bin/rename: symbolic link to `/etc/alternatives/rename'

  $ file /etc/alternatives/rename
  /etc/alternatives/rename: symbolic link to `/usr/bin/prename'

  $ file /usr/bin/prename
  /usr/bin/prename: perl script text executable
