Looks like additional storage is with a miniSD card, up to 4GB capacity. 
Hopefully in the future it can support an 8GB card as well.

I can do without things like emoji and whatnot. I basically want a 
phone, music player, and internet connection.

The biggest question now is battery life. Can it handle listening to 
podcasts for an hour or so, and then take a call?

The most common complaint I've heard from iPhone users is that the 
battery dies really quickly.
