I apologize that is not an answer to your question but I just wanted
to hint that life is easier with two partitions, one root for all but
/home and one for /home. This makes it easy to change distribution 
and still keep that valuable data and config files that you 
created/collected.
I don't know for sure but I think that RedHat install scripts also
suggests this.
