That aside, what about if it's the other way around? That would definitely break. It's not FUD - it's simply good practice not to mix & match libraries if you can at all help it. Considering that egcs doesn't need a working compiler to build itself, a simple untar, ./configure, make, make install on the target machine would probably work fine.
