dangerous, by the way.  only if the shared libraries are identical on the
two systems is this safe, and 'make install' doesn't usually give you a
way to back out safely, whereas an RPM can be uninstalled. (and then
replaced with the old, at-least-it-works-sometimes RPM packages) :)
