I'm trying to get through the how to, and it's not going quite as expected. I'll show you what the page said, and then my experience trying to follow along, and tell me where i broke with reality. This should also be good insight into how a newbie views Linux... and perhaps the world. The web page said: To check your mail server has pop, try : $ telnet mailhost 110 If it works, you will get something like "OK Pop server (...) starting" : type "quit" ! So then i went to my prompt and had the following conversation: $ telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. +OK DPOP Version 2.2i. <387.910859381@example.com> quit +OK bye Connection closed by foreign host. Here I may already have assumed too much. My POP server didn't say "starting..." as it did in the example. So maybe it's not all good. But i pressed on anyways to the next step in the 'how to'. The web page said: To install a ssh crypted "channel", first test your mail server typing : $ ssh mailhost date So then the following happened with my machine: $ ssh mailhost date bash: ssh: command not found $ man ssh No manual entry for ssh $ man mailhost No manual entry for mailhost (Here it occured to me that i had checked the internet for information on POP, but maybe the man pages would have someting specific to this machine...) $ man ipop No manual entry for ipop $ man pop No manual entry for pop (Nope...) At this point i ran out of questions for the machine. Can someone steer me back on course? ________________________________ Dave Gutteridge 3D Computer Animation Specialist e-mail: dave@example.com http://www.d-rave.com ________________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai: 20 November, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 Next Technical Meeting: 12 December, 12:30 HSBC Securities Office ---------------------------------------------------------------- more info: http://tlug.linux.or.jp Sponsors: PHT, HSBC Securities
