The gist was that he did not foresee the 640k barrier becoming a problem until after the turn of the century --- the text did not have the overtone of contempt that the apocryphal short-form suggests. Unfortunately, I didn't save the reference. (Could have been a bogus cite, of course, which would make both quotations apocryphal...) At the least, Gates is on record as having been surprised by the speed with which the 640k area was chewed up by new applications.
