One brand I've seen Virtually any ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM that is 4X or faster will work fine with Linux. (It is not actually the speed that is the requirement, its just that the ATAPI specification was open to a bit of "interpretation" prior to about the time the 4X drives appeared. Nearly all early drives will also work, but some may display "quirks.")
