Let me look at what they did. I seem to remember that there was a patch for Canna to use uum from the command line as well... I think. Usually I just stay inside of Mule, so I don't need to input Kanji outside of Mule. When I do venture to the command line, I use kinput2. Does Xwnmo have the Kanji selection window like kinput2? For example, when you type "watashi" can you zip through the possible kanji characters with C-p, C-n, C-f, and C-b ?
