Also the 56kpbs modem relies on the fact that the telco switches are mostly digital or going digital, hence YMMV depending which switch you go through. I also remember reading somewhere that USR 56kbps technology was proprietry and may not interoperate with your providers modems (unless they're buying USR modems as well). I believe there's a little bit of controversy about this at the moment so it may pay to wait. With ISDN you're guaranteed 64kbps and it's digital all the way so the signals are much cleaner. With modem technology you can at most acheive the modems advertised rate. ISDN connect times are usually in the order of 2-3 seconds, almost transparent.
