I need to look into this a bit more still but it turned out adding acpi=off on my machine causes the cursor to freeze and at least from ssh it still doesn't suspend. :(

I was hoping for the quick fix but oh well...

as to "on Wayland" I'm use the Mate Desktop and from their notes, Wayland is RSN but Ubuntu is running Wayland.  I did notice the same problem with Ubuntu Desktop not staying suspended.

Um -- RSN is Real Soon Now in case you didn't recognize the acronym.

I'm going to keep poking around but if you think of anything else...
