Thanks for all the suggestions. The problem seems to have been
resolved. I've been running it most of the day including multiple
reboots and had no more freezes.

What I did was reinstall it removing the boot-time login. On booting
I was then able to open a terminal and make the following change to
/etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

and then "sudo update-grub2".

Seems OK now. I've still some things to work on, such as Japanese
input and making suspend/hibernate work.
