Re: [tlug] ALERT: fcitx-mozc is lovely

First time poster here, had to respond to this because so happy to finally have found a solution for Japanese input! Thanks for the great tip. I'd been struggling with anthy and friends but fcitx + mozc is brilliant.

In case anybody wants to take it to the next level, check out mozc-ut:

http://www.geocities.jp/ep3797/mozc_01.html
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mozc#mozc-ut

It adds a bunch of other dictionaries totalling around 350,000 new words, including train station names and a mapping from postal zip code to name, which is pretty neat.

On arch there's a package on the AUR to install it with fcitx:

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fcitx-mozc-ut/

(But I found one link was outdated so the PKGBUILD had to be changed, see my comment in the link above. Also you might want to uncomment the _EJDIC="true" line to get EDICT bundled in too - no more jumping to ALC in a browser to do a quick lookup.)

I'd been using ibus/anthy for Japanese input on Ubuntu Vivid, which
was somehow failing to recognize my henkan key. So after fighting with
it for the best part of an hour I finally tried turning it off and
switching to another one, and it turns out fcitx-mozc is really,
really nice. It Just Worked, and it's really intuitive and smooth to
use, unlike Anthy which always felt like it was trying to stop me
writing my email.
