Many thanks for responses. It is a considerable relief after days of search-try-divert-search-backtrack...On 2014-06-19 00:29, Stephen J. Does it produce any output or error messages when doing nothing? Did you click it to make it do nothing, or did you run it in a terminal where it did nothing?Just tried the other one... in ~/Downloads ls -las... 4 drwxr-xr-x 2 brian brian 4096 Jun 19 00:28 . 4 drwxr-xr-x 44 brian brian 4096 Jun 18 23:14 ..14876 -rw-r--r-- 1 brian brian 15229442 Jun 19 00:28 MemsourceEditor-4.151-ubuntu-10.04.run 15140 -r-x------ 1 brian brian 15502955 Jun 18 16:54 MemsourceEditor-4.151-ubuntu-12.04.runbrian@Grieg ~/Downloads $ chmod 500 M*10.04* brian@Grieg ~/Downloads $ ./M*10.04* brian@GriegIn essentially no time at all, absolutely nothing happens. Which may be fairly efficient, but not much use. I did try clicking the Ubu12 one as well.I sort of expect this to start some gui installation-looking thing, though the file name doesn't include 'install'. It might need sudo ?, except that all the possibilities I can imagine would end with an error message.I will read the other comments more carefully. Gotta stop in a bit for NHK Russian (a good place for Russians to practice Japanese). More to come; privyet, spasibo.Brian
