Unfortunately, the majority of users these days seem more like the
voters in the US, focusing on the meaningless garbage--Let's prevent gay
marriage, otherwise, I'd have to spend 5 minutes explaining it to my
children---and ignoring the important.  Desktops are changed, though
both Fedora and Ubuntu tend to tie system functions to a particular
desktop--e.g., a Fedora install of openbox brings in all sorts of Gnome
garbage.  

So, let's focus on the desktop while wireless and printing are still far
more problematic than it should be.  Lately, on Fedora forums, there's
a "Ubuntu is horrible and gives nothing to Linux," movement.  It's not
worth getting involved in any of the threads, as the fanboys rush in.
The fact that Mr. Shuttleworth even has to waste time defending Ubuntu
is one reason why this won't be the year of the Linux desktop either. 

(Sorry, just amazed at the Fedora forums and venting here rather than
getting in a flame war there.  )
