I definitely want the English locale. Do you have some pointers for the
/etc/fonts hacking, as I've never done that before. (Everything works
fine on the ubuntu 8.04 machine; it is just 10.04 that is giving
preference to Chinese over Japanese.)
My needs are not that different from most people on this list I imagine:
1. English is user interface language;
2. Need to be able to view email and web pages in foreign languages,
including both Japanese and Chinese;
3. When asian glyphs are ambiguous give preference to the Japanese
glyph. (I.e. only use chinese fonts when a web page, or email,
explicitly describes itself as chinese; otherwise assume it is Japanese.)
I have 1 and 2 working fine, it is just the 3rd point that seems to be
the problem (*) with Ubuntu 10 (which is also what Dave is using IIRC).
