Re: [tlug] [OT] What's up with online Japanese<->Japanese dictionaries? [SOLVED]

Jim, Nguyen,

Thanks for responding. Thanks, Jim, for explaining the state of Japanese dictionaries.

It's too bad that there aren't official online versions of some of the larger dictionaries.

Nguyen said:

... for a gaijin like us, do we *REALLY* need it if we have no idea on what context it should be used?

I'm not sure if this statement was tongue-in-cheek or not. It makes some very strange assumptions. I think the most strange being the broad assumption that there is such a thing as "gaijin like us", who have a collectively unified set of circumstances in which we will or won't understand the context of a word.

In any case, I'm not looking to learn how to translate Japanese. I'm looking to live in Japanese. With that goal in mind, how E<->J dictionaries serve as facilitators for translation is not that important to me. What is important to me is a J<->J dictionary that doesn't leave me wanting for definitions so that I can learn Japanese in the context of Japanese.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the tips. I at least know what I'm up against now.
