Wow, I'm glad to see that so many recognize that most Japanese web sites layout and design just sucks.

I've worked in web design for years, and I can attest to Stephen's assessment - there is internal pressure within any given company to put *all* the information up front so visitors won't miss it. The concept of diminishing returns is shouted down by competing interests all vying for importance. Designers with other ideas basically get told to shut the f**k up. In most companies, "designers" are actually coders anyway.

I mean... you can still find the <blink> tag in use in Japan. The <blink> tag!! Makes me weep.

Wabisabi? Hah.

Anyway... thanks Jim, for the tip on 研究社. I'm willing to pay for a years worth of rock solid dictionary goodness, so I'm looking into it.
