Hi Dave.
To be sure your database will run properly post-apocalypse, make sure you stop your mysql daemon before you copy the database files. Unless your database is very big (many gigabytes), you may find it easier just to use mysqldump.
Also, your files will be waiting for you in the Arctic, not the Antarctic. HTH.
