I has zero income for a while when I was on parental duty.  I only had
to "cough up" from the time my income reached a certain point.  Prior
to that I was considered a dependent and actually my wife's employer
was contributing for me.

Also, if you did not go to the hospital during that time, you may not
need to pay (for the health insurance part of it).  I was asked to pay
and paid and then belatedly informed by my wife's company that I did
not need to actually pay since I hadn't received any services.  The
local office confirmed that to my wife but wouldn't of course refund
our money.
