When I first started using Japanese keyboards a lot, I was always whacking the henkan keys accidently. When I realized that that wasn't happening any more, I also noticed that I was typing somewhat faster with less fatigue. I suspect this is due to keeping my hands closer to the home position on average than I did with the US keyboard.
