The hard disk is mounted in a place where it will not conflict with other system files. Thanks to all for the advice given.

The remaining problem has to do with permissions. I can read the disk,
I can copy from the disk, but I can neither create folders/files on
the disk nor copy files to the disk.

Looking at properties gives the option of changing read/write permissions, but the changes do not take.
