Only if the "where" you use it in is in the configuration of the "where" you want to know about! This is pretty clearly not the case for David, whose hardware keeps moving from one device to another because he keeps plugging and unplugging it, and whose device special files seem to be found in odd places (though not at the present time, just to confuse matters further). That is relevant, as it succeeded in confusing not only him but a couple of those who presumed to advise him. It would be a good idea for him to do "sfdisk -l | lpr" or the equivalent once he gets his system into a happy state, for sure.
