This is actually a missconfiguration :-)
It is known that the vesa x11 driver (i assume you mean this
one, as MPlayer also has a vidix vesa driver) does not
support overlays and hardware scaling and thus does not
support Xvideo.

Yes, actually there would be a lot more information needed
as it is described in bugreports.html, but hardly anyone
reads that anyways.
