I think the difference that the original poster was referring to is the
ordering of the search results, which is definitely affected by the "hl" GET
parameter of the search. Since the query was Japanese anyway in the case in
question, the difference is much less pronounced, but the "hl" parameter has
significant effects on non-Japanese queries. Here is an illustrative
example:
English search:
http://www.google.co.jp/search?hl=en&q=karaoke
Japanese search:
http://www.google.co.jp/search?hl=ja&q=karaoke
