For system wide media player use:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/all-20071007.tar.bz2

untar them, chmod 755 the extracted files and throw them here after
creating the directory:

/usr/local/lib/codecs/

and here:

/usr/lib/win32

I also have them here:

/usr/lib/codecs/

This is in Fedora, don't know about other distros.
