There are email clients that are remarkably hard to corrupt with viruses. Generally, email clients that don't automatically execute stuff in email, and email clients that don't render HTML (and Javascript) have very little vulnerability to viruses. They have less vulnerability than reading email using a web browser, especially if the web mail requires Javascript. Sylpheed is one such low vulnerability email client. Using an email client doesn't change how much junk email (spam) you get.
