No, but if you buy older hardware, you will be safe. This might be a
great reason to just buy four or five circa 2002 DVD drives next time
you find them used at a good price.

Also, if you have a modular laptop, consider keeping the drives
around. The modular CDRW/DVD drive from my made-in-2003 Inspiron still
fits in newer Inspirons that might have hardware locking.
